Advent Reflection

Villager Featured: Advent Reflection from Boydie Girimont

Ever since I graduated from college and got married, exchanging Christmas cards during the holidays with friends and loved ones who live in other parts of the country – even the world – has been a favorite tradition. Even better is including a short letter in each card telling each other how our lives have been in the past year. This alone can keep you close with each other even though it is impossible to visit on a regular basis.

Caregivers is a branch of Pastoral Care that sends cards to those Emmanuel parishioners who have experienced difficulties, both physical and emotional, to let them know the church and its members are thinking of them, and they are not alone. I recently took over this activity, and I was surprised at how gratifying it can be to write a short note on a church printed card to someone who may feel a bit better after receiving it. We send everything from get-well cards, sympathy cards, to thinking of you cards. Some of the cards are sent to celebrate a joyous happening in someone's life – a birthday, the birth of a child and his/her Baptism, a marriage, etc, etc. And, very soon, Christmas cards will be sent to those who are home bound and can no longer attend live services. Yes, the phone and the computer are not the only ways to connect with someone; a card may be old-fashioned, but it still works great!
