November 28th, Advent Day 02
This Advent season, we are challenged to look for the presence and absence of God by paying closer attention; looking beyond the presents, decorations, and parties, for the true meaning of the season. As I looked closer at this season, I was reminded that Advent is not just the run-up to Christmas. It is also the season of preparation and waiting for Christ’s second coming to judge the living and the dead.
Christmas prep can be a hassle, but it is somewhat predictable, and we know the deadline. Am I preparing my soul to be judged by Christ when he returns? Now suddenly Advent takes on more meaning and urgency. Over the next four weeks, I believe I can strive to do both.
The first candle of the Advent wreath symbolizes the hope for God’s people (everyone) and brings light to dark places. It is easy to bring light to the comfortable well-lit places in our lives, but the impact can be minimal. This week, let us bring the light to those we don’t know by acknowledging their presence, praying for the people on our friend’s prayer list, or giving our time (not just our treasure) to those in need right here in Moore County.
Since retiring recently, I have had the privilege of mentoring men in recovery from addiction. Walking alongside these men who are turning their lives around has been truly inspiring. The newness and depth of their faith is a reminder that God is ever present and will leave no one behind. As a cradle Episcopalian, I can sometimes forget what it is like to see God’s light for the first time as these men do. Better than any present under the Christmas tree, the gift of life in Christ is given freely, without condition, and to all those in need, including you and me.
Whatever is your calling, I encourage you share God’s hope and light this week with those you don’t know. It will prepare your heart for the celebration of the birth of Jesus and your soul for His return.
