  • Chalk Broughton

    Search Committee Chair

I am a native of the Sandhills and a lifelong member of Emmanuel. I am an attorney here in Southern Pines practicing in the areas of trusts, estates, and tax law. My wife, Kara, and I have three adult children, two of whom are married. I have been involved in multiple ministries at Emmanuel, from serving as an acolyte in my youth to service on the Church’s Stewardship and Finance committees, as a Vestry member, as Senior Warden and as a Lay Reader as an adult. Emmanuel has been a very important part of my family’s life for multiple generations and I am excited and honored to serve our parish by chairing the search for Emmanuel’s next rector!

  • Harper Cook

    Vestry Representative

Raised in Kentucky as a cradle episcopalian, I knew early on that I wanted to travel the world. And nearly 30 years of Army service has allowed me to do exactly that. Now, 27 countries and 17 moves later, my family and I are committed to growing deep roots in Southern Pines, with Emmanuel as our spiritual home.

I love our parish and I am astonished by all we do for each other and our community. And I also love singing in our choir. I believe there is a core sprit to our church that is stronger that any adversity behind or ahead of us. And, in line with our transition prayer, I am excited to focus the vestry and the search committee on this opportunity to draw on that core spirt, and to be daring in our faith.

  • Shirley Denardo

I retired in 2019 after serving as a Registered Nurse for 40 years. My experience includes Critical Care, Cardiovascular Department manager, and Case Management for Hospice. I currently volunteer with the Moore County Free Care Clinic.

My history with Emmanuel began when my husband, Scott, and I moved from San Francisco to Pinehurst in 1993. We were both raised in the Episcopal Church and were warmly welcomed by Rev. Hank Franklin and our parishioners. We raised our three daughters here, and they all attended Episcopal Day School. I was on the EDS Board for six years including serving as Chairman from 1999 – 2001. I also served on several EDS Headmaster Search Committee’s over the years including the most recent search for Dr. Jill Connett, the current Headmaster.

I have had the privilege of serving on Emmanuel’s Altar Guild for many years and am currently the Co-Director. Our team has worked hard this past year to rebuild and organize the guild following the impact of Covid and other changes that have affected membership.

I am deeply honored to serve on Emmanuel’s Search Committee.

  • Stephanie Hillard

I am a cradle Emmanuel Episcopalian baptized some 75 years ago. In the following years I was confirmed, active in the church (Sunday school, YPSL (EYC), choirs, Altar Guild, Summer Nursery) and was married here to an Army Officer. We had both of our children baptized at Emmanuel and always felt at home visiting several times a year when stationed in-country. We returned to the Sandhills permanently in 2005.

My husband belongs to the local Anglican-Catholic church, Christ Church. We both are active in our respective churches. I am presently involved with the choir, Pastoral Care (Connections, baking committee), Lay Eucharistic Ministry (LEM and Home Communion), lector, Outreach (Thrift Shop and Episcopal Lunch ministry.) In the past I have served as chairs of Intentional Greeting, Fellowship Commission, and Pastoral Care, and served on the Vestry, with my last two years as Senior Warden.

Emmanuel is and has always been my spiritual home. I am excited about this new chapter we all will be sharing together as we search and call a new Rector.

  • Sandy Lampros

I have been a member of Emmanuel for forty years. Over these years I have served on many ministries from the Vestry to our youth group! I have traveled with amazing parishioners to Costa Rica and to help in rebuilding in New Orleans after Katrina. In every area of serving, I have grown in my faith and in my love for our amazing church. I have watched the heartaches and celebrations that we have shared as a loving church family. I presently serve as a Lay Eucharist Minister, an usher and a delegate to the Diocesan Convention and now as a member of the search committee. I am proud and honored to be a part of this future for our church. With prayer and God’s guidance, I hope to be able to represent each of you. Keep us in prayer and God’s blessings to each!

  • Edie McWilliams

I’m a 4th generation Floridian who never planned on leaving Florida, but God had other plans. NC has been my home now for 31 years. I have been a clergy spouse; confirmation teacher; Stephen Minister; served on the Commission on Ministry; been Happening and Cursillo team members; part of the ECW; served on the Outreach committee and was chair of Clergy-Spouse Support.

Currently, I continue to serve on the Newcomers committee. While on Vestry the past 3 years, I also served as the Chaplain. I have been a Daughter of the King for 22 years and this Order continues to be my rule of life and deep commitment. As a praise and offering to God and part of St.Theresa’s flower guild, I enjoy arranging flowers for the altar. Twice a year I co-facilitate a ladies Bible Study. I am both humbled and honored to serve you, my Emmanuel family, in the search for our next Rector. With God’s help, I promise to do so in prayerful perseverance by the power of the Holy Spirit.

  • Steve Millender

I am a cradle Episcopalian. As a kid I sang in the Burlington Boys Choir, was an acolyte, was an active participant in youth group, and went on a mission trip to Trinidad. I went to Christian Summer camps as a kid and felt a calling during one of those summers (which I shared with a camp counselor) to “somehow take the bible and make it where kids could understand it”. Fast forward about 25 years and with a ton of help from my wife, Tarra, we got into the work of children’s ministry here at Emmanuel. Our work with Emmanuel’s youngsters in the Alleluia Chapel program led me to the role as chaplain at Episcopal Day School. In that role I have been both an employee of the church and of the school. I have enjoyed working with all the wonderful people in both institutions. I am deeply honored to be a member of the Search Committee and to serve as chaplain to the group.

  • Patty Pottle

    Vestry Representative

I became an active member of Emmanuel Church 15 years ago through confirmation by Bishop Curry. Originally from Memphis, Tennessee, I grew up Catholic. I relocated to Southern Pines with my husband of 44 years, Peter, who was a lifelong Episcopalian. Peter was baptized and confirmed at Emmanuel and is now in the Church’s Memorial Garden. Together, Peter and I raised three children: Bill, Anna and Jenny.

I am a current member of the Vestry. I am also a member of the Pastoral Care Committee, both the Altar and Flower Guilds, Daughters of the King, and a Thrift Shop volunteer. I previously served on the Outreach Committee as the Liaison to the Sandhills Moore Coalition for Human Care.

I am honored to be a member of the Search Committee and am committed to finding a new permanent rector for our Emmanuel Church Family.
