Associate Rector Ministry Context
Emmanuel Episcopal Church is a program-sized parish in the rapidly growing micropolitan area of Southern Pines, Pinehurst, Aberdeen, and Whispering Pines. It is a parish steeped in ministerial history, priding itself with strong lay leadership in outreach, pastoral care, liturgy, music, and fellowship. Emmanuel is in a season of growth both in its membership and attendance as well as its fiscal resources. This has allowed the congregation to dream boldly.
The congregation longs to deepen its spirituality and increase its relationships with the community beyond its red church doors. Specifically, Emmanuel is in the process of building stronger relationships with the Episcopal Day School (with whom they share a campus), Penick Village (a retirement community begun by the Rt. Rev. Edwin Penick), and the rural parishes of the Sandhills convocation.
Due to the area’s retirement draw, any Associate Rector would find him/herself surrounded by a geographic and occupationally diverse congregation. The nearby military base, Fort Liberty, also provides a steady flow of families in unique situations. The strengths of this congregation are a strong and active membership and experienced staff comprised of four full-time staff members (Rector, Organist and Choirmaster, Parish Administrator, Facilities Manager) and three part-time staff members (Director Christian Formation, Director of Finance, Communications Coordinator).
